O galego e o inglés están cheos de idioms que, aínda pertencendo a culturas e historias diferentes, ás veces din o mesmo con palabras case irmás. Hai expresións que coinciden tanto no fondo como no significado —como falar de “romper o xeo” para empezar unha conversa difícil— e outras que, malia compartir a mesma idea, chegan a ela por camiños moi distintos. Nalgúns casos, a imaxe é practicamente a mesma e sentimos que as linguas se dan a man. Noutros, descubrimos metáforas novas que nos obrigan a mirar a realidade doutro xeito: onde en galego “botamos leña ao lume”, en inglés “add fuel to the fire”; pero mentres aquí “imos ao gran”, alí “get to the point”. Esa mestura de semellanza e diferenza lembra que cada lingua é un xeito propio de habitar o mundo, pero tamén unha ponte: grazas aos idioms, entendemos mellor non só o que se di, senón como pensa quen o di. 

 

 Galician and English are full of idioms that, despite coming from different histories and cultures, often point to the same ideas. Some are strikingly similar in both meaning and image —like “breaking the ice” to start a difficult conversation— while others share the same underlying concept but reach it in very different ways. Sometimes the picture is almost identical and it feels as if the languages are shaking hands. Other times we discover new metaphors that make us see reality from another angle: where Galician speakers “botan leña ao lume”, English speakers “add fuel to the fire”; and while in Galician we “imos ao gran”, in English we “get to the point”. This blend of similarity and difference reminds us that every language is its own way of inhabiting the world, but also a bridge: through idioms, we understand not only what is being said, but how the speaker thinks and feels.
